September 1st is the start of recruiting chaos—but the truth is, even the best players don’t always land at their dream school. Learn how to prepare, stay realistic, and find the right fit in the recruiting journey.

Ah, September 1st. The magical day that kicks off the frenzy of calls, emails, and texts that—if you’re prepared—can turn into visits, conversations, and eventually offers. Sounds dreamy, right? Except here’s the part no one really likes to talk about: most kids will not end up at the school they dreamed about.
Yes, you read that right. Even at 16U. Even the “best player on the field.” Even the kid everyone swears is “a lock for [insert big-name program here].” Reality check: the recruiting process is way less about what you want and way more about what the college needs.
And guess what? That’s often completely out of your control.
Why “Best in the Country” Doesn’t Mean “Every College Wants You”
Let’s be blunt: not even the #1 player in the country is recruited by every college. Heck, many times it’s only a handful. Why? Because not everyone is a fit everywhere.
Here are some real-life situations:
The depth chart reality. College X has a senior shortstop graduating. Perfect! Except they’ve already had their eye on a first baseman. They’ll let their younger players plug the SS gap for a year or two, so they aren’t even looking at first basemen in your class. Doesn’t matter if you’re the best first baseman alive.
The personality mismatch. Coach A is high-energy, bouncing-off-the-walls hype. You? You’re cool, calm, and collected. Even if you’re the top player at your position, you might not be the right fit personality-wise.
The All-American block. You might be the best catcher in your grad year, but if your dream school has a sophomore All-American already in that spot, the door is basically shut for your class.
What You Can’t Control (Sorry, But It’s True)
Previous commits
College positional needs
Coaching personalities
Team culture fit
These factors will always impact where you land. And no amount of talent alone fixes it.
What You Can Control (Read This Twice)
Preparation. Don’t stumble into September 1st like you just rolled out of bed. Be ready with emails, videos, a polished profile, and an understanding of which schools actually need your position.
Marketability. Keep developing. Keep communicating. Stay on the radar, even if you’re not Plan A for a program.
Awareness. Pay attention to the recruiting year ahead of you. If the 2026 class ahead of you had a wave of pitchers signed, that tells you something about 2027 needs.
Options. Please, for the love of softball, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Yes, have your “dream schools.” But make sure you’ve got realistic backups that also check your boxes.
So, Can You Control Your Destiny?
Yes and no. You can’t “culture fit” your way into a program that doesn’t need your position. You can’t “out-talent” an All-American already in your dream spot. But you can give yourself the best chance by:
Targeting the right schools
Staying proactive with communication
Building your skills and brand
Understanding that flexibility is key
The path from September 1st to an offer is never as straight as players (or parents) think. It’s messy. It’s unpredictable. And it’s full of twists you can’t plan for. But the players who stay prepared, realistic, and open-minded? They’re the ones who end up with the opportunities.
Because at the end of the day, recruiting isn’t about the perfect fairy tale—it’s about finding the right fit. And the right fit almost never looks exactly like what you imagined at 12U.
